Dubai has officially launched its long-awaited driverless taxi service, ushering in a new era of autonomous transport in the region. The innovative robo-taxis, which are now seen gliding along the iconic Jumeirah roads, represent a significant step forward in the Emirate’s mission to become a global leader in smart mobility.

The driverless fleet, operated by US-based company Cruise, began its trial run earlier this year with two vehicles and has already completed numerous journeys transporting residents and tourists alike. Each vehicle is equipped with a variety of sensors, cameras, and advanced AI algorithms to ensure safe navigation through Dubai’s complex urban environment.

Initially, the service is available in selected areas of Jumeirah, but there are ambitions to scale the project city-wide in the coming years. Authorities aim for these eco-friendly electric taxis to constitute a substantial percentage of the Emirate’s transport by 2030.

During the launch, it was noted that the taxis can be summoned via an app, similar to other ride-hailing platforms. Unlike regular ride-sharing, however, these vehicles have no human driver—the car takes full responsibility for the journey, adapting to real-time traffic and ensuring passenger safety at every turn.

Officials emphasized the importance of digital transformation for the future of Dubai’s transport sector, with His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), stating: “This initiative enhances Dubai’s global position as a leading city in smart mobility and innovative transport solutions.”

Passengers are already expressing curiosity and excitement about the prospect of riding in a car driven solely by artificial intelligence. The RTA, meanwhile, assures that robust safety protocols have been implemented, with a remote operations hub able to take over in case of unexpected scenarios.

As autonomous systems become increasingly reliable, Dubai is poised to set a bold example for other cities worldwide, showing how technology and urban innovation can deliver both practical benefits and futuristic experiences.
