OpenAI Offers Massive Pay to Attract Top AI Talent
OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence (AI) research company behind ChatGPT, is offering eye-popping salaries to lure the world’s most sought-after AI researchers and engineers. According to recent data, some roles at the company come with total compensation packages that can soar past $900,000 per year.
The company is best known for powering the generative AI boom, and its appetite for top-tier machine intelligence talent has created intense competition in the field. Recent internal data obtained by Business Insider shows that the median annual compensation for an AI research engineer at OpenAI is $925,000. Even the lower end of the range is remarkably high: entry-level engineers reportedly earn between $260,000 and $370,000 in total annual compensation, while experienced engineers can bring in upwards of $450,000.
At the very top, AI research scientists—the minds behind the latest advances in machine learning—can make as much as $450,000 to $10 million, with the higher numbers reflecting restricted-stock units and other long-term incentives.
As tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta also pour billions into AI, the demand for specialized researchers, engineers, and data scientists keeps climbing. OpenAI’s compensation strategy reflects both the scarcity of such experts and the critical role they play in developing breakthrough models.
“The best AI researchers can basically write their own checks right now,” said someone familiar with the hiring process.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has argued that high compensation is essential for attracting and retaining the ‘geniuses’ capable of keeping the company at the forefront of the AI revolution. The company is known for a startup-like culture and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology, further boosting its attractiveness.
With AI at the center of a global technological arms race, the astronomical salaries are yet another indicator of how valuable these skills have become. As organizations race to build smarter, more powerful products, offers for top AI talent could continue to climb even higher.
